reading olympics

There are so many things I'm mourning the loss of because of the coronavirus.  Most of them revolving around Bryce's fifth grade year and the "lasts" he won't get to experience.  One of them being the Reading Olympics competition.  He worked hard this year and read all 32 books (TWICE) and some a third.  He was so excited about being his teams' captain this year and looked forward to hopefully leading them to a victory.  The abrupt end to school took that away from him but our amazing librarian put together a modified competition on zoom this week!  I borrowed these images from the Facebook post she compiled to celebrate the season.

Bryce was recognized for reading ALL of the books for the competition.

Myself and our GT teacher were the coaches for Bryce's team.

Three to four teams were grouped together for the modified competition.  There were only about six people to join our round, but Bryce's knowledge of the books helped lead the group in points.  He was excited his group took first place.  It definitely wasn't the same as the real competition but at least he got some closure.  I was so proud of his efforts this year.  He's really looking forward to it in middle school because the kids are not required to do reading Olympics so the kids on his team will want to be there next year!
