friday fun

This is Emmy's "cheese" face, hand and all.  I guess she thinks she's taking a picture when I take her picture.

I can't seem to get a good picture with both of them so I have to take two.  Then I end up with one and a half in each picture!

Our friends the Hawleys came over today to play.  Aiden and Maggie enjoyed playing in the water with Bryce and Emmy.

Their younger sister, Sadie, stayed safe out of the water!

I couldn't stop taking pictures of Emmy in her cute little bathing suit!

Happy Friday, y'all.

a day off

Bryce's school had a parent appreciation breakfast this morning so Jason stayed home and went with us.  He ended up taking the whole day off so when we picked Bryce up after school we headed to Chick Fil A for lunch and then to the bowling alley for some free bowling.

Jason's sister told us about free bowling last summer, so we made sure to take advantage of it again this year.  Once you sign up, kids can bowl two games for free everyday over the summer (you still pay for shoe rental).  They also have an adult deal for $34.95 for up to four adults to bowl two games a day all summer.  Check it out HERE.  Jason is thinking about investing in some bowling shoes so he doesn't have to pay the rental fee!

Bryce had tons of fun.  There was a lot of this.

And LOTS of this.  A 6 pound ball is really slow, even when rolled off the ramp.

There was even some of this!

Bryce was ahead for a short time during the second game.

Then they were tied.

And then this happened (STRIKE).

And Dada got lots of high fives.

Emmy had fun too!

I love an "off" day during the week that helps us deviate from the normal routine.  Jason likes it too, but it's just hard going back to work tomorrow because today seemed like Friday for him.

Go sign up for your free bowling now,  Happy bowling!

new naptime routine

Our naptime routine has gotten a little shaken up these past few weeks.  Emmy typically takes a morning nap at 9 and then Bryce and Emmy both take an afternoon nap at 1.  Bryce is a great napper and usually sleeps until 4.  Emmy's naps are inconsistent, leaving me little time to actually get anything done during naptime.  She hasn't been taking her morning nap recently (because we've been out or she won't sleep), but she still can't quite make it until the afternoon nap.  So now that the kids aren't on any type of the same schedule for napping, I've been letting Bryce skip his naps so we're not forced to stay home for him to sleep for 3 hours, while Emmy is wide awake.  Luckily, the lack of sleep hasn't been a problem as we near bedtime!

A friend of mine told me about rest time bins she saw on pinterest so I decided to give them a try so Bryce can still have some quiet time when Emmy naps and I can have a few minutes to get things done or even just relax for a few minutes.  I found some leftover baskets from when I was teaching so I quickly put labels for each day of the week and filled them with things we already had around the house.  I'll probably change them out every month and make some more activities to add variety.  I was excited how well they fit under his bed.

I tried to include activities that Bryce can do by himself (and do them correctly) without feeling the need to call me for help.

Monday:

papers with straight lines, jagged lines, and shapes
a pair of scissors to practice cutting
puzzle
alphabet flashcards to match upper and lowercase letters

Tuesday:

puzzle
dry erase alphabet book to practice writing letters

Wednesday:

two small puzzles
coloring book and markers
Easter egg matching game (upper and lower case letters)

Thursday:

animal puzzles
dry erase board, marker, cards with shape words (and picture on back) to practice drawing shapes and maybe even write the words

Friday:

puzzle
dry erase animal book
old cookie sheet (magnet board), magnetic letters, word cards (number and colors) to spell words or find numbers

Bryce has quiet time in his room so he also has access to all of his books while he's in there.  I have a ton of ideas of additional things to add to the bins, but these were all things I already had on hand and didn't need to make or go out and buy.  He was very excited to get started on the first bin today.  I sat with him before I left his room and explained everything in the basket to make sure he didn't have any questions.  I was downstairs unloading the dishwasher and I heard banging in his room and I thought, oh no this whole "rest" time isn't going to work.  But when I checked on him in the monitor I saw him working away on a puzzle.  He probably did the puzzle about five times before he climbed in his bed to read some books.  He never fights a nap, but he is excited about his new bins and no naps.  I did tell them that there will still be days when he needs to nap, but it just depends on the day since I'm still trying to tweak Emmy's nap schedule.

I got on pinterest for the first time in a long time this afternoon to see if I could find the bins my friend was talking about.  I thought it couldn't hurt to get a few more ideas for my bins as I add things.  Here is what I found.

monday night softball

Jason coaches and plays softball for our church on Monday nights and Bryce loves to go to his games.  Unfortunately they only have three nights of early games this season.  We went last week and left because it rained.  We stayed for a whole game this week, but notice the hooded jackets.  Spring is still not here and we have a frost advisory tonight!  I'm sure it will be 100 degrees by the time he has his next early games!

Mother's Day

I'm so glad I get to be their mom!

I have literally eaten my way through Mother's Day weekend! Knowing that we were going to have lunch with Jason's mom and dinner with my mom, Jason planned ahead and fixed me a Mother's Day meal on Saturday night. He made Skyline! If you've never had this, you MUST.TRY.IT. We obviously don't have the restaurant here, but Kroger sells it in the frozen section and it's delicious.

Bryce came home with a gift from school on Thursday but he wanted me to wait until today to open it.  Inside a cute little canvas bag with a special message and a potted flower was this quiz.  I had so much fun reading his sweet and funny answers.  I'm personally thrilled with the fact that he thinks I never get angry with him.  Maybe I'm better at keeping my cool than I thought!

He also made this sweet picture at church on Wednesday night and he wanted me to save it for today too.

Jason helped him make me this sweet card.
(If you're wondering, it's a picture of me going through a door, ha!)

Jason clearly knows the way to my heart. If all the delicious meals weren't enough this weekend, I'm good to go on my favorite candies for a couple of days (yes, I said days.  It doesn't take me long to devour some candy).  Jason also got me some flowers because it's the one thing Bryce told him he wanted to get me!

I had a great day with my family and they made me feel so loved, especially when Bryce offered me an M&M from his ice cream and said he wanted me to have it because "it's your day"!

Chase is 5

Bryce's cousin Chase turns 5 on Sunday.  He had a basketball/Ninja Turtle party tonight to celebrate.

Chase's aunt Kerry was in town for the party so she dressed up as a Ninja Turtle.

The kids got to decorate their own basketball shirt/jersey.

Such a cutie!

Emmy even played a little basketball.

Kelly is way more talented than I could ever be and can actually recreate the ideas she pins on pinterest!  Everything was so cute.

I'm pretty sure he only ate the top of the cupcake!

We had a great time and I just can't believe that Chase is already 5.  And I really can't believe he's going to kindergarten next year.  They grow up so fast!

I want one

I have been wanting a wreath for our front door that I can use throughout the year.  I have a wreath for the fall and Christmas, but nothing for the rest of the year.  I found this wreath over on Sandi's blog and I just fell in love.

I immediately started searching Etsy for something similar because let's face it, I don't have the DIY skills to even attempt my own.  I really like this wreath from bopsidoodle.

I also really love the wooden letter on this one from Boa and Boo.  I'm thinking the letter would look cute in a turquoise or magenta (like Sandi's bow) to add a pop of color.  What do you think?

Now I just have to convince myself to spend the money!

mommy & me

We headed to a mommy and me event today at a local outdoor mall.  The event was inside today because of the unpredictable weather.  We met Bryce's friend Thomas there and the kids had a great time dancing to the music after they made their crafts.

Emmy loves music and loves to clap along and dance.

Bryce did a little dancing, but he's definitely shy like his mama.

When the event was over, we headed outside to play since it wasn't raining.

The train you could sit in seemed to be the favorite today.

We got lunch at Qdoba afterwards since the kids got a coupon for a free kids meal.  I am loving staying home with the kids and getting out during the day with them and friends.  And a big thanks to Thomas' mom for the pictures from today.

field trip

Bryce's class doesn't have an organized class field trip until next year, but the room mom for his class really wanted to get the kids together for their own field trip, so the moms and kids met up at Maymont yesterday for a fun day.  Here are 5 of the 7 kids (one of the girls in his class wasn't able to make it and another girl caught up with us later in the day).

Emmy loved looking at the animals.  She said "baa" to all the animals. I was finally able to teach her to say "maa" for goat before we left.

My brave little boy feeding the goats out of his hand.  He used to be too terrified to even hold the cup up for them to eat out of!

Jumping the rocks in the Japanese Gardens.

After our picnic lunch we tried to recreate some of our pictures since one of the other girls joined us.

They loved seeing the animals but they are kids at heart and still needed something to play on.

It was cloudy and overcast, but it turned out to be perfect.  The walk back up to the barn (with a stroller full of stuff) is quite an uphill hike so the cool weather was nice.  Thanks Ms. Barbara for planning such a fun trip and putting so much effort into making things special for the kids.  Bryce loved it!
