five on friday

Happy Friday!  I'm looking forward to this long holiday weekend with the family.

Our local baseball team, The Richmond Flying Squirrels, has its last few games of the season this weekend and we're going to a couple.  We're planning on going tonight for the giveaway for kids and then maybe again on Sunday for kid activities (free lunch and throwing on the field).  We love Nutzy (from a distance).

Football season is here and I can't wait to watch the Hokies play this season.  A walk-on freshman from our county is going to be starting as a full back.  Pretty cool.  We have plans to watch Saturday night's game at Jason's sister's house since we don't have cable and the game will be on ESPN.  I'm hoping for a good game, but unfortunately they are playing the #1 team, Alabama.

I've been seeing all kinds of pumpkin d├ęcor and food on pinterest and it's getting me excited for cooler temperatures and all things fall.  I saw these cookies on facebook recently and then stumbled upon them at Walmart.  DELICIOUS!

I'm not excited that school is starting, because I will miss Bryce, but I am excited for him to be back at school with his friends.  We went to his open house on Wednesday and he was glad to see the other boys from his class last year.  They are in the same class this year too!

A college/blogger friend of mine contacted me last year about joining MOPS this school year and I jumped at the opportunity.  I struggled finding a new normal last year when I started staying home and I was too late in the game to get involved in social outlets for moms.  Luckily I met moms from Bryce's preschool and formed friendships that have really helped me adjust.  I'm looking forward to finding out what MOPS is all about.

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend, y'all.

tuesday tidbits

We had a busy weekend and we haven't slowed down yet.  Since it was such a nice day on Saturday, we decided to tackle a big project that's been hanging over our heads, Jason's garage.  I feel like we just threw stuff in there 3 years ago when we moved in because we had lots of room and lots of stuff.  Over time we acquired a boat, lots of kid toys, and lots of junk.  Everything always got shoved in and never really put away/organized.  This weekend we took most everything out and organized it all as we put it back in.  And of course, I don't have a before picture, but I do have an after!  Jason typically puts his truck up on the lift and his Miata under it.  It really looks organized then!

Jason had home communion on Sunday and Jason's mom took the kids after church so I headed home to tackle another project.  We are in the process of fixing up our front porch.  We have new porch posts on order so while I wait for them to come in, I decided to paint the porch floor.  The stain was fading and chipping and it just wasn't looking good anymore so we decided to use Deck Over.  I was really pleased with the color we chose and the way it turned out.  This was after one coat.  It looks even better after two!

MeMa took all four kids fishing BY HERSELF on Sunday afternoon.  Brave lady!

Since it's the last week of summer vacation, we're trying to pack it full of fun.  We met Chase and Taylor at Maymont for a walk around the park and a picnic lunch on Monday.

Sweet girls.

Hoppin' rocks!

I don't have any pictures of the rest of our day, but Chase and Bryce hadn't had enough of each other yet so we met them at a friend's pool later in the day.  My kids went home with Kelly after the pool and I went grocery shopping.  By the time I picked them up after dinner, I think they had all had enough of each other!

Today was a little more low key.  We ran some errands in the morning and then I took Bryce for his back to school haircut.  We have open house at his school tomorrow night and then he has his first day next Wednesday.

What a handsome four and a half year old.  Bryce hit the four and a half milestone on Sunday and that was the first thing he told us when he got up that morning.  I'm so proud of the young man he is becoming.  He is so smart, kind, thoughtful and independent.  Here are some things he's up to these days.

We have been working on sight words and reading this summer and he is doing a fantastic job. He probably knows 25 sight words and he can read short a, i, o, and u words.  We started short e this week.

He loves Emmy and he's very kind to her.  Emmy does plenty of things that bother him, but he takes them all in stride.

He's very generous and always wants others to enjoy the things he's doing.

I'm pretty sure I could leave Bryce home alone all day (I would never do this) and he could take care of himself.  The most independent thing he's done recently that just cracked me up was one morning he was still downstairs after I let Macy out and come back up.  He let her in the house when she was ready and gave her the special dog food we give her in the morning.  I thought it was the cutest thing.

Bryce's bravery in the pool has really  improved this summer.  He was still hesitant to put his face in the water at the beginning of the summer, but now he spends his time jumping in, getting out, and jumping back in.  Now if we can work on his swimming form and how to take breaths, but I know it will come with time.

Bryce really loved t-ball last season so we signed him up for fall ball which will start in a few weeks.

I'm excited for Bryce to start a new year of school, but I'm really going to miss him.  Luckily it's only three hours, three days a week.  I'm excited for him to meet new friends and build his social skills.  He's such a shy, soft spoken kid and I jump at the opportunity for him to socialize.

I'm sure there are tons more things I could tell you, but at least we all stay updated with Bryce's development through my daily posts about him!

5 on Friday

I'm back this week for another edition of five on Friday.  I skipped out last week because I didn't really have anything interesting to share.  I think I've come up with a few things from my Instagram that I haven't already blogged about.  Enjoy!

  - one -

I always forget about chocolate covered strawberries.  They are SO easy and SO good.  I made some Saturday evening and finished them all before bedtime!

- two -

Emmy was given this cute dress as a baby and she wore it last year in Disney World with the cutest little matching diaper cover.  It's been hanging in her closet ever since.  This Sunday is was cool and rainy so I pulled out a pair of black leggings so we could get some use out of it as a shirt.  I thought she looked so stinkin' cute!

- three -

It was still rainy on Monday so I used the morning for some organizing.  Of course we had to go out in the rain to get some things for organizing, but still.  I had been putting Emmy's shoes in a drawer in her dresser, but she just had too many.  Bryce has so many boxes of clothes and such in his closet for the next season that it was hard to find room for shoes.  I bought these over the door organizers and they are amazing.  I'm not sure why it took me this long to get some of these.

- four -

Last year the chalkboard frames were all the rage for the first day of school pictures.  I couldn't find one locally already made so I just hand wrote a little sign for Bryce on computer paper.  BORING!!  I'm not a DIYer but I decided to try my hand at my own frame.  It was super simple and it turned out great.  I'm not thrilled with how the chalk erases, but it will work for a picture twice a year!

- five -

We picked another pumpkin yesterday morning.  We have about three more to pick eventually.  I'm still not convinced we'll actually have any for the fall, but it's been fun watching these random pumpkins pop up in the yard and grow!

Happy Friday.

yorktown beach

We went to Yorktown Beach with friends yesterday and had so much fun!  We had never been there before, but we will definitely be going back.  It was just an hour drive (much better than the drive to Virginia Beach) and it was the perfect setting for a day at the beach.

We had a brief rain shower in the middle of the day, but it quickly cleared and the sun was back out.  We were glad we stuck it out!

Once we were all done in the water, we dried up and waited for a trolley ride.

It was a nice scenic drive around Yorktown.  The air conditioner was the best part!

Our own little taste of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood!

Thanks Shipleys for a fun day!

water fun and a lunch date

Our church has a VBS follow up every year to invite our guests back for a re-cap of the lessons and some water fun.  This year there was an inflatable slide.  It took Bryce a while to decide if he was going to do it, so he warmed up with a ride down with uncle Dave first.

He finally decided to give it a try by himself (he's in the middle).

The little kids were so light that they got air when they hit the hill in the middle.

I'm not sure he loved it, but he did love standing at the end when the big kids dads went down and made a huge splash!

The next rotation was much more their size.  The kids had fun in the pool, sprinkler, and just running around spraying each other with water bottles.

These two!

A little water balloon action.

No better way to end the day than with popsicles.

We just got a Mellow Mushroom a few months ago and I was so excited to get to try it out yesterday with some friends.

Even though I'm not teaching anymore, I'm so thankful to still be included in this group of ladies who were a part of my life for 7 years!  I always enjoy getting together with them and will always treasure their friendship.

Happy Saturday!

Bryce day #2

Back in December we had a "Bryce day" because we noticed that Bryce was acting out for attention because Emmy was requiring a lot of my attention then.  He loved it and it made a huge difference in his behavior.  Bryce has been eagerly awaiting the movie Planes so we decided it was time for another Bryce day.  Only this time, it was planned just because it's a fun tradition we wanted to continue!

I had bought him one of the planes from the movie to give him as an added bonus for the day, but he bought some of the micro drifters planes with some money he had earned, and then Jason's parents bought him a set, so I decided to take the plane back and let him pick out another set to add to his collection.  He only needs one more set to complete them.  He carried his bag of planes around all night.

This display caught his attention back when we went to see Monsters University so we've been counting down the days until it came out!

Bryce picked out Swedish fish at Target to bring to the movie, but Jason and I splurged on popcorn and drinks!

Bryce chose Chick Fil A for dinner after the movie.

Bryce started the day off at the dentist.  Not really a fun part of Bryce day, but he did great.  Poor thing has two cavities, so we'll be visiting a pediatric dentist to have them filled.

B.E.A.U.tiful day

We had a full day planned today and we were pleasantly surprised with beautiful weather.  We started the morning off at a local mall for "Mommy and Me and Daddies too".  Sunglasses were the free gift this month.  Emmy didn't want to have any part in wearing hers.  We ran into our buddy Keagan (on the right) while we were there.

After this event, we headed to the new Redskins Training Camp they just built here in Richmond.

Emmy napped on the stroll into the park.

She missed our picnic lunch so she ate her lunch later.

The boys couldn't wait to watch the real players tackle each other.

Only problem, there was no tackling!  The boys kept asking when they were going to start practicing.  They didn't realize they had already started.  We didn't last long!

The girls could have cared less about the football.

The obligatory photo op.

Chase came back to our house to play for the afternoon and Emmy went to Kelly's to play with Taylor.  We all met up at church tonight for work night to clean up from the storms we had on Saturday.

MCC's youngest members hard at work!

I love this group of kids and it makes me happy to know that they are the future of our church!

Happy hump day Wednesday!
